With different types of fanservice, we’ve got different kinds of anime showing up this Winter. While this (p)review of sorts is rather late (a handful of the mentioned series have already aired their first episodes), it’s never too late to introduce what seems to be a rather placid season.
This time, TachiDays is going to rate the potential moe-ness for all of us otaku using the above four categories: junai-kei, erokawaii-kei, otome-kei and denpa-kei. But of course, not using ‘romantic’ parameters.
ONWARDS THEN!
Series that make me moe
Ookami to Koushinryou

Running Time: 24 minutes
Number of known episodes: 12
Genre: Romance
Airing on: Chiba TV, Tuesdays at 1:30am starting 8/1/2007
| 8-Jan |
| 5-Jan |
Thoughts: Persona-lly (oh the puns) I’m a huge fan of the Persona series, and though I haven’t played the latest installment - Persona 3 - I’ve been hungrily devouring the manga. Granted, this is nearly nothing related to Persona 3, except for possible overall encompassing themes, it still makes out as a potentially good sci-fi action anime. Plus, we’ve got Koyasu, a brief appearance by Midorikawa, and Namikawa Daisuke as part of the cast - which usually says something about the quality of the production: that it’ll either be really good, or it’ll fail trying. LOL. In any case, I can’t wait to watch the episode I have.
Moe category: Denpa-kei
Zenryoku Usagi

Running Time: unknown
Number of known episodes: unknown
Genre: Kids
Airing on: TV Kanagawa, Saturdays at 8:30am starting 5/1/2007
Thoughts: I placed this up here in the category because I adore the art-style like whoa. From the main website, the series seems to be about a group of construction worker-rabbits, which sounds like a zany (and successful!!) anime. I like usagi, so sue me. Kekeke. In any case, it’s for kids, so it’ll probably satisfy even the most attention-deficient otaku out there.
Moe category: Denpa-kei
zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Dark Comedy
Airing on: TV Kanagawa, Saturdays at 12:30am starting 5/1/2007
Thoughts: MY BELOVED ITOSHIKI NOZOMU IS BACK. Ijou da.
Just joking. But frankly speaking, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was and is probably one of the most underrated series ever produced (Gintama being another one). If you love dark humor, or you loved the first season, you HAVE to watch this. <3 If you don’t, I will be in despair.
Moe category: Erokawaii-kei LULZ.
ARIA the ORIGINATION

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 4
Genre: Slice of Life
Airing on: TV Tokyo, Mondays at 2am starting 7/1/2007
Thoughts: I sadly have never had the time to watch the previous ARIAs, but I’m probably going to, before or after I watch the Origination. Why? I think it’s necessary for every otaku to have a yasashii-kei sort of anime in their watch-list every season. We only can deal with so much humor, brutality, sex, and the what not. Sometimes, we need something to relax our selves, and our souls, something like Aria! I’m looking forward to this!
Moe category: Otome-kei
Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-

Running Time: 30 Minutes
Number of known episodes: 15
Genre: Drama
Airing on: Tokyo MX TV, Mondays at 3am starting 7/1/2007
Thoughts: GUNSLINGER GIRL FTW. NOTHING MORE CAN BE SAID.
Moe category: Junai-kei (because we all want to support the girls)
Mnemosyne

Running Time: 60 minutes
Number of known episodes: 6
Genre: Sci-fi
Airing on: ATX, Sundays at 00:00 starting 3/2/2007
Thoughts: That picture looks hot. And the age rating is mature. MMMMM. HOT STUFF. On another note, ‘mnemosyne’ is the Greek personification of ‘Memory’. I’m predicting quite a bit of issues with the problems of remembering (or not remembering). Well then, memorize that air date!
Moe category: EROKAWAII-KEI DESHOU?
Noramimi

Running Time: unknown
Number of known episodes: unknown
Genre: Comedy
Airing on: CBC, Wednesdays at 1:45am starting 9/1/2007
Thoughts: Don’t the mascots look like they’re Tofuman-ish characters? (Hmm, maybe Devilrobots had a hand in this?) I’m watching this because of the sort-of hype it’s getting. It’s supposed to be comedy and frankly speaking, the characters themselves look comical already. So even if the jokes are really bad, I’ll just stare at the little munchkins and laugh.
Moe category: most probably denpa-kei.
Shigofumi

Running Time: 30 minutes (?)
Number of known episodes: 12
Genre: Drama, Supernatural
Airing on: Chiba TV, Saturdays at 1:35am starting 5/1/2007
Thoughts: “A story about a miracle, involving Fumika, a quiet but hard working girl who wears a uniform of a mail carrier, and her talkative staff and partner Mayama. The Shigofumi is a posthumous letter, the last resort of relaying a deceased person’s last message to his or her loved ones: family, friends, and significant other. (- ANN)” The last resort of a person. A last resort? The wording intrigues me.
Moe category: Junai-kei or otome-kei
Series that I might jump on
Hakaba Kitarou

Running Time: 30minutes (?)
Number of known episodes: unknown
Genre: Supernatural
Airing on: FujiTV, Thursdays at 12:45am starting 10/1/2008
Thoughts: GEGEGE NO KITARO!!! Essentially this is a remake of what Gegege no Kitaro should’ve been (in fact, Gegege no Kitaro’s original title is Hakaba Kitaro). But I guess having a “hakaba” might’ve lessened audiences - I don’t know - so hence a name change. Nakagawa Shoko (Shoko-tan) is a known huge fan of Gegege no Kitaro, and it’s no surprising that she’s doing the ED for the series. I’ve never really watched Gegege, but since Hakaba is purportedly closer to the manga, I’ll give this a shot. This is about the amount of horror I probably can survive.
Moe category: denpa-kei because you might get frightened.
Hatenkou Yuugi

Running Time: 30 mins
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Adventure
Airing on: KBS Kyoto, Fridays at 2:30am starting 4/1/2007
Thoughts: A girl is booted out of her house, she meets a stranger, has suspicious chemistry with him, and possibly meets the other guy. They both can do magic. Okay. I’m hooked. XD
Moe category: junai-kei (and erokawaii-kei for the girls.)
MAJOR

Running Time: 30mins
Number of known episodes: 83 OMG
Genre: Sports
Airing on: NHK, Saturdays at 6pm starting 5/1/2007
Thoughts: How many baseball anime/manga are there~?!?!??! But MAJOR is supposedly ranked as Japan’s number 1 anime / most loved anime so I’ll catch a few episodes of it before deciding. They look like nice spruced up versions of SLAM DUNK XD. The boys you’d want your parents to see.
Moe category: denpa-kei
Minamike ~okawari~

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Comedy
Airing on: TV Tokyo Kei, Sundays at 1:30am starting 6/1/2007
Thoughts: I’ve still got the original Minami-ke on my computer waiting to be watched so I will put this on hold. However, with the first being lauded as being really funny, I’ll take a look at the remake just to see how they ruined/improved the series.
Moe category: denpa-kei
onchan

Running Time: unknown
Number of known episodes: unknown
Genre: Kids
Airing on: Hokkaido TV, Fridays at 10pm
Thoughts: THE CHARACTERS LOOK SO CUTE. LIKE MICROBES. ME WATCH MICROBE-LOOKALIKES.
Moe category: moeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I mean, probably otome-moe.
Porfy no Nagai Tabi

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: apparently, 52
Genre: Kids
Airing on: BS Fuji, Sundays at 7:30pm starting 6/1/2007
Thoughts: Porfy. :\ I was like, WTF at the name. Then I found out that it was short for Porphyas. Dude, don’t girlize a guy’s name like that. No one wants to be called “PORFY”. =A=;;. In anycase, it’s got Inoue Kazuhiko. I’m sold.
Moe category: otome-kei
H20 ~Footprints in the Sand~

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 12
Genre: Romance
Airing on: TVQ, Wednesdays at 3:15am starting 2/1/2007
Thoughts: This reeks of renai-ness and usually I’d avoid such genres like the plague. But CLANNAD stole my soul so I’m willing to give this a shot. Apparently someone gets punched in the first episode. So yeah. Watch.
Moe category: Junai-kei
Series that I’m vaguely interested in
Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore

Running Time: 30minutes
Number of known episodes: 10
Genre: Harem
Airing on: Tokyo MX TV, Fridays at 6:30pm starting 4/1/2007
Thoughts: HAREM. MAID, SAILOR FUKU, BUTLER, IMOUTO-SAN HAREM. I’m only interested in teh bulter-ish character. Is she going to be all stoic and bultery? Or have some mysterious past? Does she have some mad fighting skills?!!
Moe category: erokawaii-kei i guess.
Sisters of Wellber s2

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Adventure
Airing on: Tokyo MX TV, Tuesdays at 2:30am starting 1/1/2007
Thoughts: I have never watched the first, and I’m probably not watching this because of the word “zwei”. I do not like the word “zwei”.
Moe category: junai-kei
true tears

Running Time: 30 minutes
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Romance
Airing on: TV Kanagawa, Saturdays at 1am starting 5/1/2007
Thoughts: “Shinichiro is a student living in what would be a dream come true for most high school boys, but for him is mostly a frustration. A well liked girl in school named Hiromi has lived in his house for a year along with his family. Her father was a close friend of the family, and when he died they immediately took her in. She is popular and well liked, always smiles, is talented in sports- but Shinichiro knows there must be tears inside her. Having an artistic tendency, he makes watercolours of her and thinks about wishing to ease her tears. Yet he cannot bring up the nerve to talk to her even in his own home. She, too, is quiet and withdrawn in their house, quite unlike at school. Shinichiro is also distracted by teasing from his friend Nobuse for watching Hiromi from afar, a curse of bad luck from a strange girl named Noe, and being forced to perform Muhiga dancing. By helping Noe he hopes to ease his own problems, yet he seems to have difficulty helping himself.”
YARRR. SO YEAH IT’S LIKE THAT. SHINICHIRO KNOWS THAT SHE MUST HAVE TEARS INSIDE HER. How corny is this. :\ I want to watch this and LAUGH AT SHINICHIRO. I already don’t like him from the synopsis.
Moe category: junai-kei
Series that I probably wouldn’t watch unless you bribed me
Moegaku 5

Running Time: I DON’T CARE
Number of known episodes: ME DON’T CARE D:
Genre: Magical girl
Airing on: BS Fuji, Mondays at 5pm starting 14/1/2008
Thoughts: Aya Hirano, what are you doing here. =A=;;; I HATE THE CHARACTER DESIGNS FOR THE FEMALES. They look like monsters!! Detest. But the guys look hot. I will watch (if I do) only for bishounen. MMmmmm. Bishounen.
Moe category: erokawaii-kei for the hot bishounen.
Rosario to Vampire

Running Time: 30minutes
Number of known episodes: I forgot to check
Genre: Harem
Airing on: Tokyo MX TV, Thursdays at 11:30pm starting 3/1/2007
Thoughts: I kind of am tired of the whole genre that Rosario + Vampire falls under, but the character designs look nice enough. Still, I think this is going to be too fanservicey for my tastes.
Moe category: erokawaii-kei
Yatterman

Running Time: ??
Number of known episodes: ??? (apparently 70?)
Genre:Kids/Mecha
Airing on: TV Tokyo Kei, Mondays at 7pm
Thoughts: This looks strange. Very strange. Why are kids watching this?
Moe category: …. NO MOE.
Yes! PreCure5 GoGo!

Running Time: ???
Number of known episodes: ???
Genre: Magical Girl
Airing on: TV Asahi, Sundays at 8:30am starting Feburary
Thoughts: After Sailor Moon, there is no one who can usurp the position of Magical Girl series. Pretty Cure seemed okay when I watched it in Japan - but that was only one episode so yeah. I suppose I could stand one episode of neon colours and high pitched voices. Then again, Takeuchi Junko is in this. WTF?
Moe category: …. er….. kawaii?
Ayakashi

Running Time: ??
Number of known episodes: 13
Genre: Supernatural
Airing on: Tokyo MX, Tuesdays at 25:58, starting December 2007
Thoughts: The baddie looks perverted and disgusting. The character designs actually look spiffy, reminiscent of 90s anime, but they looked horrible in the trailer. (Maybe it was the wrong trailer) I’m not really keen on watching this, what more, it was from a really hentai eroge. :\
Moe category: EROKAWAII FOR YOU FREAKS.
And that wraps up this REALLY LONG and TIRING review. :\ Enjoy this season folks!
